MirandaSAKHINO will make her debut at FASHFEST. For designer Miranda Seakgosing, who now calls Australia home, fashion is a cultural translator and a way of balancing different worlds through style. MirandaSAKHINO is a label that represents an equal fusion of African and Western fashion and we love it!
We caught up with Miranda to get inside her brain and chat about from inspirations to icons. With sewing machines rattling off in the background, this is what we learned. I honestly don't know how she does it? I'm exhausted already and I haven't even asked my first question.
Miranda’s collections are filled with colourful prints and versatility for the fashion, detailed admirer.
Her previous collection, was sourced from her beautiful country of Botswana, Africa. This time around, she has sourced, printed fabrics and manufactured everything in Australia (specifically, Melbourne).
What inspires you?
As inspired as I am by travel and people, there's one thing that never ceases to amaze me - nature. I find it to be the most inspirational of all, as you'll hardly ever find 2 trees that are exactly the same. There's always something of the extraordinary and wonder to be found in nature. Even in the most humble of places, there's always a thing of beauty to be discovered if one opens their mind (and eyes) to the world around them.
How did you get into fashion?
Well, I can not remember a time when I was not into fashion; from a little girl obsessed with her mother's shoes and piling on every piece of her jewellery she could get her paws on (regularly), to a teenager who collected international fashion magazines into her 20s and beyond. Yes, even today I still have magazines that date back more than a decade. Fashion has always been and will always be a part of me. I did deviate momentarily when I got my Business degree from Monash University, but after 3 years of working in the Finance industry, I just had to answer to my heart's calling and "come back home" to fashion.
Who are your icons?
There's a lot of people whose work I admire, such as Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham, particularly because they didn't take the normal route into fashion designing, but somehow still managed to build successful fashion brands. When it comes to personal style, I love to see what people are wearing on the street style blogs, with my favourites being Miroslava Duma and Olivia Parlemo amongst many others (including fictional characters like Blair Cornelia Waldorf).
Describe you
Hmmm, a few random things that come to mind... I'd rather stay at home with my loved ones (or even alone) than go out. I love to watch re-runs of sitcoms like Friends and Big Bang Theory and laugh so hard like I have never seen them before (which still baffles my husband to this day). One thing that makes me as delirious as fashion does is dancing. That being said, one of my new favourite things is being a mum. If I'd known it would feel this way, I'd have done it sooner. It is a privilege and an honour to be trusted with such a precious little life. Needless to say, I spend most of my day crawling around and playing, and I go to bed with songs about bumble bees and butterflies playing in my head, which always makes for a good night'
